Art Skills is a small, friendly group for young people who enjoy being creative and would like to develop their artistic skills across a wide range of materials and techniques.
Throughout the year we explore different areas of art, including drawing, painting, textiles, mixed media, sculpture, mosaics and printmaking.
The sessions contain elements of the Upper Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 Art and Design curriculum, while still allowing young people plenty of freedom to work in their own style and develop their own ideas.
We look at the work of different artists for inspiration, discuss and analyse their work, and explore how artists use materials, techniques and visual ideas.
Young people develop their work through sketchbook studies, experimentation and planning before producing more developed or final pieces. This makes the group particularly useful for young people who would like to build a portfolio of artwork.
Rather than everyone producing exactly the same piece, young people are encouraged to make their own creative choices, respond to themes individually and develop confidence in their own artistic style.
Work completed within Art Skills can also contribute towards Bronze or Silver Arts Award, with additional support where needed.
The emphasis is on developing skills, confidence, creativity and enjoyment of art in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Art Skills runs on Wednesdays from 9:30am to 11:00am.
Art Journaling is a relaxed, creative group where young people can explore ideas, experiment with materials and express themselves in their own individual way.
Each week has a loose theme or starting point, but there is no expectation that everyone will interpret it in the same way. Themes may be inspired by nature, seasons, special interests, identity, imagination, memories, feelings or everyday life.
Young people can draw, paint, collage, doodle, write, layer materials and combine different techniques within their journals.
There is no right or wrong finished result. The emphasis is on enjoying the creative process, exploring ideas and developing confidence rather than producing a perfect piece of artwork.
Art Journaling can help to encourage creativity and self-expression, build confidence and self-esteem, support emotional wellbeing and give young people a relaxed space to connect with others and have fun.
The groups are kept small and supportive, helping young people to feel comfortable, work at their own pace and develop friendships over time.
Art Journaling currently runs on Mondays from 10:00am–12:00pm and 1:00pm–3:00pm and 6.00-7.30pm
InspirED is a registered Arts Award centre, and I am a trained Bronze and Silver Arts Award Adviser.
Arts Award allows young people to develop their own creative interests, learn new skills, explore artists and arts organisations, and record their achievements in a portfolio.
Bronze Arts Award is a Level 1 qualification.
Silver Arts Award is a Level 2 qualification, which is at GCSE level. It involves a more substantial personal arts challenge as well as an arts leadership project.
Arts Award can be particularly useful for home educated young people, or for young people who are currently out of education, where following a traditional GCSE Art route may not be straightforward or suitable.
Depending on the individual, Arts Award support may take place through Art Skills sessions, additional 1:1 or 2:1 support, or a combination of these.
The aim is to make the qualification achievable, meaningful and centred around the young person’s own creative interests.
Whether you’re interested in individual sessions, small-group art sessions, or simply want to find out more about InspirED, I’d love to hear from you.
